KUALA LUMPUR, 13 AUGUST, 2011: The glorious art of Iranian calligraphy displayed at an art exhibition of the Holy Quran in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) here, is bound to leave visitors spellbound.

The eight-day event – organized by the Iranian Embassy in conjunction with the Holy Month of Ramadan – began today.

The embassy's cultural counselor, Dr Ali Akhbar Ziaei, said the Art and Calligraphy Exhibition of the Holy Quran presented a platform to introduce and educate the public on the different aspects of the Quran

He said the exhibition, held for the first time in Malaysia, was aimed at promoting the work of leading calligraphists and artists of the Quran.

He said the main attraction of the exhibition was the masterpiece of the Quranic carpet book (containing the entire text of the Quran) woven by Iranian artists.

Dr Ali disclosed that the Quran Carpet was hand-woven by nine Iranians over six years, using silk and wool, and released by the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Feb 28, last year.

Malaysia was the first country where the Quran Carpet was being displayed, he told a press conference at the exhibition's pre-launch at the KLCC today.

Dr Ali said visitors would be impressed with the old manuscripts of the Quran belonging to the First and Second Century Hijrah at the exhibition which also displayed the Quran translated into 50 international languages.

He said workshops on illumination and calligraphy of the Quran, conducted by world renowned and leading calligraphists from Iran, would be held during the exhibition.

He encouraged parents to bring their children to the event as it was an opportunity to learn the art of calligraphy of the Quran. Prizes will be given to those participating in the event while visitors would receive gifts from Iran.

Exquisite art and calligraphy works on the Quran will be on sale at the exhibition.
