Muhyiddin, Shafie, Mukhriz to remain in Umno
KUALA LUMPUR - Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and
Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir announced today that they will remain in
Umno.
Questions over whether they would remain in Umno arose in the wake of the decision by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to quit the party.
Muhyiddin, the Pagoh Umno Division chief who has been suspended as the party deputy president, said he would remain a member so that he could improve the party from within.
"I will have no locus standi to say anything about Umno if I were to quit the party," he told a press conference here.
Shafie, who is an Umno vice-president, and Mukhriz, the Jerlun Umno Division chief who had resigned as the Kedah menteri besar, attended the same press conference and said they would also remain in the party.
Shafie said: "There is no question of my leaving the party."
"The approach (compared to his father Dr Mahathir's) is different but the principle is the same," said Mukhriz.
Dr Mahathir had announced on Feb 29 that he was quitting the party because of disillusionment.
Muhyiddin touched on his suspension as the Umno deputy president recently and said he would refer the matter to the Registrar of Societies to determine if it was valid.
He claimed that his suspension was not in accordance with the party procedure and constitution and that he was not given the opportunity to defend himself.
Muhyiddin said he was not involved in any conspiracy to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as alleged by certain leaders. - Bernama
