KUALA LUMPUR, 10 JANUARY, 2012: The United States (US) State Department said the court ruling which acquitted Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on a sodomy charge reflected favorably on the independence of Malaysia's judiciary.

"We welcome the closure of this long-running case, which we've followed closely," said a statement from the office of the department's spokesman, issued through the US Embassy here today.

It said the ruling presented an opportunity for all Malaysians to focus on the future.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday acquitted and discharged Anwar on a charge of sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
