Khairy: Umno to set up supporters’ club at all public varsities

REMBAU, Aug 26 — Umno, through its Youth wing, will set up party supporters’ clubs at all public institutions of higher learning in the country to gain support for the party and Barisan Nasional (BN) from undergraduates.

Umno Youth head Khairy Jamaluddin (picture) said it was an initial measure taken by the movement in line with amendment to the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) 2012 recently, which allowed undergraduates to be involved and to hold positions in any association or organisation, including political parties.

“So, rather than wait for them to join our party and BN, it’s better for us to play a proactive role by going to campuses and setting up Umno supporters’ clubs on all campuses,” he said when approached by reporters at his Raya open house at the Kampung Gadong community hall, here today.

He said Umno Youth would enter all public university campuses in the near future to hold dialogues with students and draw up the formation of the club.

Khairy said besides giving support to Umno and BN, the setting up of the clubs would provide a platform for students to convey their ideas and views to the government.

He said although students were seen as more inclined to support the government, such efforts must be carried out to maintain this inclination among undergraduates and ensure that they continued to support BN.

Meanwhile, Khairy who is also MP for Rembau, said PAS must issue a statement on the stand of its alliance with DAP, which opposes the setting up of the ‘hudud’ law if the Pakatan Rakyat were to administer the country.
